The Varied Thrush is a striking forest bird of the Pacific Northwest that appears in Arizona only as a rare winter visitor. Males are easily recognized by their bold plumage—slate-blue upperparts, orange underparts, and a distinctive black breast band—while females are generally paler and browner. In Arizona, records are scattered and typically occur in late fall through early spring, most often in higher-elevation forests or in wooded foothill canyons, particularly in the northern and central parts of the state. Sightings are usually of single birds that may linger for a season, sometimes visiting feeders with seed or fruit. Because Arizona lies well outside the species’ normal breeding and wintering range, the Varied Thrush is considered a casual or accidental visitor.
