The Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) is a common sparrow in Arizona, with several subspecies occurring in different habitats and seasons. The Gray-headed Junco (J. h. caniceps) breeds in high-elevation conifer forests of the state’s mountains, while in winter large numbers descend to foothills, canyons, and desert towns. The Oregon Junco (J. h. oreganus) is a regular winter visitor, especially at lower elevations, and the Pink-sided Junco (J. h. mearnsi) appears less frequently but is often found in mixed flocks. All show the flashing white outer tail feathers typical of the species, making Junco hyemalis one of the most familiar sparrows across Arizona in the cooler months.
