The Varied Bunting inhabits arid canyons and thorn scrub of southern Arizona. Males display dazzling plumage blending violet, red, and blue tones that change with light, while females are plain brown. They favor brushy slopes, mesquite thickets, and desert arroyos, often near rocky outcrops. Their breeding season coincides with the onset of monsoon rains, when food is plentiful. The song is a sweet, bubbling warble that can be heard in early morning and late afternoon.
