The Hepatic Tanager is a more localized breeder in Arizona, favoring pine-oak and mixed-conifer forests in the southeastern mountain ranges such as the Chiricahuas, Huachucas, and Santa Ritas. Males are deep red with a dusky, brick-colored head, while females are muted yellowish with gray tones. Unlike the brighter Western and Summer Tanagers, the Hepatic’s coloration is more subdued, adapted to the dappled light of higher-elevation woodlands. It feeds on insects and berries and is often seen in pairs during the breeding season. This species winters southward into Mexico and Central America.
