The Dickcissel is a rare migrant and sporadic breeder in Arizona, most often seen in grassy fields and agricultural areas. Males resemble small meadowlarks, with a yellow breast, black “V,” and grayish head. They breed mainly in the Great Plains but occasionally appear in Arizona during favorable conditions. Their song is a sharp, buzzy “dick-dick-cissel,” often delivered from fenceposts or tall grasses. Dickcissels feed on seeds and insects and sometimes form large flocks after breeding before migrating to South America for the winter.
