The Lazuli Bunting is one of the most colorful summer birds of Arizona’s foothills and canyons. Males have bright blue heads, orange breasts, and white bellies, while females are soft brown with faint blue tinges. They arrive in April and breed in open woodlands, riparian edges, and brushy slopes. Their song is a cheerful, warbling series of notes, and they often visit backyard feeders for seed. After nesting, they migrate south to winter in Mexico, often joining mixed flocks with other seed-eating species.
