The Green Heron is a small, stocky wading bird commonly found in Arizona’s wetlands, ponds, and riparian corridors during the warmer months. Recognizable by its deep green back, rich chestnut neck, and dagger-like bill, this secretive heron often hunts from a low perch, occasionally using bait—such as insects or twigs—to lure fish, showcasing its remarkable intelligence. In Arizona, it breeds primarily in the southern and central regions near water sources lined with dense vegetation. Though more common in summer, a few individuals may overwinter in the state, especially in the lower deserts. Despite being widespread, its elusive behavior often keeps it hidden from casual observers.
