The Ruddy Ground Dove is a small, chestnut-colored dove that occasionally strays into Arizona, though it is considered a rare visitor to the state. Widespread from Mexico through Central and South America, this species is known for its preference for open country, fields, and lightly wooded areas. In Arizona, Ruddy Ground Doves have been recorded primarily in the southern counties near the Mexican border, with sightings typically occurring in agricultural areas, desert edges, and riparian zones where food and water are available. These doves are slightly smaller than the more common Inca Dove (Columbina inca), measuring about 6.5–7.5 inches in length, with males showing richer rufous plumage and darker wings, while females are paler and more subdued in color. They feed mostly on seeds and grains, foraging on the ground in pairs or small flocks.
