Brown Pelicans are rare but regular visitors to Arizona, typically seen at large reservoirs, lakes, and rivers—especially during post-breeding dispersal or after coastal storms. Most sightings occur at places like Lake Havasu, Patagonia Lake, and the lower Colorado River. These striking seabirds are easily recognized by their large bills with expandable throat pouches, long wings, and graceful gliding flight. Adults display a brownish-gray body, pale head, and striking yellow or white on the head and neck in breeding season. Though primarily coastal birds, Brown Pelicans occasionally wander inland, where they provide a spectacular sight soaring low over Arizona’s desert waters.
