The American White Pelican is a striking, large waterbird known for its massive orange bill and broad white wings with black tips visible in flight. In Arizona, these pelicans are primarily seen during migration and in winter, especially at large reservoirs, lakes, and rivers such as Lake Pleasant, Roosevelt Lake, and the lower Colorado River. Although they do not nest in Arizona, they stop to rest and feed in these aquatic habitats during their seasonal movements between breeding colonies in the northern Great Plains and overwintering sites along the Gulf of California and coastal Mexico. They feed cooperatively, dipping their bills to scoop up fish while swimming in groups. Their graceful flight and impressive size make them a spectacular sight.
