The Black Vulture is a large, dark-plumaged scavenger with short, broad wings, a short tail, and a bare blackish-gray head. Unlike the more widespread Turkey Vulture, the Black Vulture has white wingtips and a heavier, more compact build. In Arizona, this species is primarily found in the southeastern part of the state, especially around the Sky Islands region and the lower desert areas near the Mexican border. Though still considered uncommon, its range has slowly expanded northward in recent decades. Black Vultures rely on sight more than smell to locate food and are often seen following Turkey Vultures to carcasses. They roost and soar in groups and are known for their strong social behavior.
